We've now come to the end of Winter Quarter! The past week, we've had our final push getting our app to a solid, workable state to show at our presentation in Germany. We've made a ton of progress in our UI (media player in particular) and in our phone to phone communication.
In terms of UI, we added some sleek media player buttons that Audrey designed in Photoshop that match with our color scheme of black, silver, and cherry red (#FF0927).
Much nicer to use these buttons than to have just simple "Play" and "Pause" text buttons. Audrey also added a custom + button to add songs to the jam. We also implemented the back and skip buttons, which are a great addition. Currently, the song just loops in the order on the playlist. For future work, we'd like to be able to select loop vs shuffle, see the song's progress and drag to the middle of a song, and drag and reorder the song order. Another thought for the future is whether or not we want songs to disappear from the jam after they have been played. That's probably something to add to the Settings page.
Another enormous area of improvement we've had is in phone to phone interaction. We now have the ability for one phone to create a new jam and another phone to join the jam. You currently join a jam by inputing a "Jam ID," which is the IP address of the other phone (which is displayed on the other phone's screen for ease of use.) Eventually, we would like to have phones' jams be discoverable and to display nearby jams upon clicking the Join Jam button.
Upon joining another phone's jam, all of the songs stored locally on each of the phones is displayed in realtime to show a collective list of all of both phones' songs.
Each user can then add songs to the jam, which updates what the other phone sees, and control the media player. The songs stream from the Jam owner's phone, which is ideal because this will be the user whose phone is connected to the car's Bluetooth.
With just a day left before we leave for Germany, we don't want to make any more huge changes to our code. Now, we have some more brainstorming to do about further implementation of the P2P and what future features to add.
We want to still stick with simplicity and ease of use, but have a few ideas for further additions to the app. We are considering having a Quick Jam mode and a Custom Jam mode. The Quick Jam mode would be as is. The Custom Jam mode would allow a user to start with an existing playlist of songs as the jam, instead of having to manually add in each of the songs on that playlist. This mode could also allow other features, such as a public vs private jam.
We are finishing up tidying up our code and finalizing our Winter Quarter Documentation. We are looking forward to giving our presentation in Germany next week at the Audi headquarters. We believe we can provide a perspective different from the other two Audi groups, as we are more focused on the older, Audi-driver demographic with our app.
